Accessing Medical Care When Going Away to College

Going away to college is an exciting time, but it’s also important to ensure you’re prepared to take care of your health while away from home. Here are some key steps and tips to help you access medical care during your college years:

  • Notify PTHA if you will be attending school outside of our service area.
  • Update Registration: Remember to update with your new information and submit your enrollment letter. Also, be sure to update your registration each year to remain eligible for services. You can text us at (253) 593-0238 or call us.
  • Know Your Rights and Privacy: Familiarize yourself with health privacy laws, such as HIPAA, and understand who can access your medical records. If you’re over 18, your parents may not have automatic access to your medical information. Consider signing a release form if you want them to be involved.
  • Establish a Primary Care Provider (PCP): If you don’t already have a PCP, you can visit our website to help you find a provider – puyalluptribalhealthauthority.com
  • Consider Telehealth Services: Virtual consultations can be a convenient way to get care for non-urgent issues.
  • Stay Up-to-Date on Vaccinations: You can get your vaccinations during your regular scheduled appointment or contact us to schedule a vaccine appointment.
Referred Care Outside of PTHA

Purchased Referred Care Patients – Routine or Urgent

  • For routine care outside of PTHA, you must get prior approval for each case of needed medical service. Contact your PCP or call our on-call service at (253) 593-0232.
  • For emergent care, please give notice within 72 hours of receiving care by emailing ReferralServices@eptha.com.
  • Submit any medical bill, or collection notice as soon as they are received. You can scan and email statements to: PatientAccounts-Claims@eptha.com.

Know What to Do in an Emergency

  • Memorize the campus emergency contact number and the address of the nearest hospital or emergency room.
  • Familiarize yourself with your college’s protocols for emergencies, including mental health crises.

Pack a Personal Health Kit

  • Bring a basic first-aid kit with bandages, pain relievers, fever reducers, and any over-the-counter medications you frequently use.
  • Include any prescription medications you take, along with a copy of your prescriptions in case you need a refill.

Practice Preventive Care

  • Establish healthy habits like regular exercise, eating balanced meals, and getting enough sleep to reduce the risk of illness.
  • Prioritize mental health by utilizing counseling services or joining campus support groups. If you have a mental health crisis, call or text 988.
