Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time of special importance in Indian Country. The American Indian Cancer Foundation reports that breast cancer is the most common cancer among Native women and the second leading cause of cancer death. Because breast cancer can develop without noticeable symptoms in its earliest and most treatable stages, regular screenings and mammograms are the most effective way to find cancer early—when treatment has the best chance of success.
Here are some other important facts about breast cancer:
• 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime.
• Breast cancer is not just a women’s issue. Though breast cancer is more common in women, all bodies have breast tissue and people of all genders can be diagnosed with breast cancer.
Mammograms
PTHA has mobile mammogram events throughout the year to help patients take the step toward early detection. These screenings can save lives — and we’re grateful to everyone who makes it to their appointment.
We know there’s a high demand for these events and our waitlist fills up quickly. But you don’t have to wait for the mobile unit to get screened. Many of our patients can access mammograms at other nearby locations.
Talk to your primary care provider about your screening options — they can help you schedule one that works for you.
Early detection is key. Take care of yourself, get screened if eligible, and encourage your loved ones to do the same.
